  1. I emailed Max Hastings after reading his "Armageddon" on the subject of the battle for Hurtgen Forest, and asked him why the Allies had not chosen simply to set fire to the wood instead of suffering those horrendous casualties. His response was, "Gosh! I wonder why they did not think of that " - which sounded rather sarcastic. it was a serious question. Has anyone an answer? An air raid with incendiaries would have driven the enemy out.
