" The A-10 has served the Air Force reliably since the days of the Cold War, through Vietnam and the Gulf Wars." The A-10 had no relationship with the war in Vietnam other than the fact it first flew in 1972 when the US was drawing down forces there. Production versions of the jet weren't delivered to the USAF until 1977, two years after the Vietnam conflict ended. To claim that the A-10 had an advantage regarding fratricide because of it's relatively slow speed is not supported by history. Two well publicized examples of A10 involving the destruction and killing of British soldiers and destroying equipment during Desert Storm and Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan mitigate against this idea. Additionally, comparing the costs of military hardware like the F-f35 and the A-10 is meaningless: the value of the dollar over time is widely different. Moreover hardware can have varying costs based on contract value and the amortizing R&D costs.
